My parents never baked. My dad roasted chickens, simmered soups, and made some mean barbeque but baking rarely happened at my house. So when there was a bake sale at school, I would rummage through my backpack (or my parents' bureau) for some spare quarters or dimes. I remember biting into a moist, sweet cupcake and loving every bite. These bake sales let me taste what it was like to be American. (I mean this in all seriousness.)
So when Adventures in Shaw asked me to join her and Arugula Files in running a bake sale to benefit Martha's Table, I was all in. I love doing work for charities but also, this would give me a good reason to make the treats that made me feel so good as a child. On my list so far are rice krispies treats, brownies, spice cupcakes and caramel apples.
Please come out and support us. We will be at the 14th and U Street Farmers market on Halloween day from 9am to 1pm. If you would like to donate some baked goods, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
